The best foods for brain development & growth in newborn babies.

Newborn babies spend a large part of their incipient stage sleeping and eating. Though, during their routine (which, to be honest, is not a lot), your little one is going through a remarkable transformation in growth and development. Wondering where this development takes place in your child? You are not alone. Let’s talk about where this occurs and what foods contribute to your baby’s growth.

Physical development

A good aspect of children’s growth and development in the early stage will be in their physical change. In the first 2-3 weeks, their weight may drop due to a change in feeding pattern but this is nothing to be anxious about as they will normally regain weight ¬†after the second week.
In the first month, most of their body part movements will simply be reflexes as their coordination isn’t developed yet. However, from the third month, babies can use their hands and feet consciously.

Intellectual development and sensory skills

A child can recognize the voice of its mother as early as the first month. As they develop, babies will focus more on objects that are
moving or shiny. They can also coordinate their hands and feet to perform certain tasks. All of these are signs of a child that is growing in its cognitive abilities.

Speech Development

This should be under intellectual development but it almost feels like an aspect on its own. Right from the day babies are born (and even from inside the womb!), they are updating their language database by listening to the sounds in their environment.
As they grow months older, they can hear better and start to curate the tone of language. It’s amazing to know that finer details like intonation, the pronunciation of individual letters, etc,are all part of the things that babies identify in speech.

There is little you can do than to give your newborn the required nutrients to help its growth and development. Breast-milk is the ultimate food for a newborn baby as it contains all the required nutrients at the right temperature.Notwithstanding, as the child becomes mature enough for the intake of solid food, you must be conscious of the type of food to eat. The first 3-4 years in a child’s life are fundamental to its brain development.¬† This is the foundation to build upon for the rest of the child’s life. As a parent, you have a huge role to play in maximizing the evolution of your child’s brain in this period.

Engaging in cognitive exercises to help them think is very important. Also, fun activities like playing music and little games, improve brain function.
Food, however, serves as the primary utility for the brain growth of a child. In the remainder of this article, we will talk about the best food to improve brain growth and development in a child. And we are starting with the most obvious choice.

1. Breastmilk

Medical experts recommend that babies should be fed solely on breast milk for the first six months. After this, healthy food that is rich in nutrients should be complemented with breast milk for another six months. Why?

Where do we start? The benefits of breastmilk are endless. Breast-milk has all the required nutrients for growth and development in a child and
combines them at the right ratio during breastfeeding. The viscosity of breastmilk also makes it easy to digest for newborn babies, unlike baby formulas that are a bit thicker.

It contains antibodies that strengthen the immune system and fights off diseases. Based on the evidence of this, breastfed babies are less likely to have infections and disease than those who are fed with baby formulas.

Better IQ: While there is no real proof to back this up because of many external factors involved, breastmilk does contain the right amount of nutrients for brain development. The brain needs food to function and develop – nutrients are the brain’s
food.

2. Sweet Potatoes

When it comes to nutritious food that is super delicious, sweet potato comes out top. Due to its soft texture, it can be smashed into a paste for easy ingestion in babies.
Packed with beta-carotene and Vitamin A, this food item is great for the eyesight of a child. It contains Vitamin C and E which boosts the immune system and reduces the risk of falling ill. Also, sweet potatoes have Iron content to produce red blood cells and prevent anemia.

3. Whole Grains

This list wouldn’t be complete without whole grains – they are the perfect food for babies.
They are filled with fibers, vitamins, protein, and antioxidants that are crucial to the growth of a child. Whole grains come in different forms like oats, cereal, brown rice, etc. All of which are suited for the different stages in a child’s life. For example, oatmeal is a great option for babies that are up to 6 months and above. An important nutrient that a baby needs whilst growing up is Iron and some whole-grain cereals have an abundance of Iron in them. Iron helps produce enough red blood cells to move oxygen to the essential parts of the body to develop, including the brain.

4. Blueberries

They contain Vitamin A and antioxidants to help prevent illnesses. Blueberries are also rich in Vitamin C and fibers for brain development.

5. Egg

Egg yolks contain choline -a nutrient that plays a significant role in memory retention and brain function in an infant. All the essential nutrients like Vitamin A, E, and D are all present in eggs.
Many nutritionists recommend eggs in the diet of little children and it’s not hard to see why.

As the brain growth and development of infants is evolving in the early stages of their lives, adequate nutrients are needed to accommodate this transformation. Nutrients are contained in the food that babies eat but not all food is the same. Some are packed with nutrients for growth and development which makes them superior to the others.
