Positive early morning routines have been proven to have an impact on our productivity level throughout the day. It helps to set the tone right? A good morning routine can guarantee that you approach the rest of your day feeling strong and healthy, with a positive attitude. Successful business owners place top priority in their morning routine.
We researched several successful business owners globally and we were able to come up with a list of early morning routines that have kept them successful and productive. The lists below are compiled from the morning routines of successful business owners like Richard Branson, Warren Buffet, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Indra Nuyi and Elon Musk. They all don’t necessarily observe all the routines listed here, but they share some in common.
Let’s take a look at some of these routines and see how we can incorporate them to move our lives forward.
One routine that is common among these successful business owners is the daily habit of rising early from bed. It is believed that humans have more willpower early in the morning. These busy business owners & CEO’s are determined to maximize this power and achieve a lot even before the day begins. According to Vanderkam, a survey of 20 executives showed that 90 percent of them wake up before 6 a.m. For instance, the CEO of Pepsi, Indra Nooyi, wakes at 4 a.m. and ensures she is in the office no later than 7 a.m. Then Disney boss, Bob Iger begins his day at 4:30 am to read, while Jack Dorsey of Twitter wakes up daily at 5:30 am to jog.
The habit of waking up before your competitors with a fresh mind and little or no distractions is an advantage. Especially when you have a lot lined up for you to do. If you do not have a lot lined up and you are starting off in the entrepreneurial world, then do the things that you would normally leave to last. It is not easy to imbibe this routine if you have been the kind of person that wakes up late, but you can start by going to bed early.
The most important thing to these successful business owners is starting their day with a peaceful, and calm mental state. For you to be more productive, your mind needs to be in its executive state. These busy entrepreneurs have confirmed that early morning meditation helps them combat anxiety and stress from their body systems. Embracing a habit of early morning meditation practice can be a game-changer in your life experience in the best way possible. To be effective, you must be consistent, as it is a daunting task to slow down and be in complete control of your thought process.
Plan the Day
Effective planning is a critical element of success and successful business owners have made a routine out of it. They take advantage of the clarity in their minds and the relaxed nerves to plan their day and also come up with strategies for execution. Oprah Winfrey said she wakes up as early as possible to plan and strategize and this routine gives her more working hours in the day to just execute and get results. It is not productive to be planning when you ought to be executing and vise-versa.
Top on the list of morning rituals of these successful business owners seems to be exercise. It ranges from simple activities like running on the treadmill, to more physically challenging exercises like weight-lifting. Sergey Brin, co-founder at google says he exercises regularly every morning. His obsession for fitness is not hidden judging by the number of gym-wears and Vibram barefoot shoes in his wardrobe. He believes that rollerblades, yoga stretches, or early morning jog can help set the tone for a great day. A routine of early morning exercise can help you burn fat, speed up your body metabolism and eliminate stress. The health benefits are countless and successful people know that their health is key to their productivity.
It cannot be over-emphasized that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A lot of professionals or entrepreneurs tend to skip breakfast a lot citing busy schedules. This is not the case with these successful business owners. In addition to providing you with the energy you need to start the day right, a healthy breakfast also provides your brain with the nutrients it needs to function optimally.
Richard Branson, The CEO of Virgin Group, wakes up at 6:45 am and exercises. He always follows it up with a healthy breakfast that is rich in nutrients. This sets him for a productive day and this is his daily routine. We cannot say for certain that eating breakfast causes these people to succeed in their business or maintain healthier lifestyles, but one thing is sure; skipping breakfast can throw your body’s metabolism off balance. Science has proven that whenever you wake up from sleep, your blood sugar level needed to help your muscles and brain function optimally is low. A plate of healthy breakfast could be all you need to have a productive day.
Stay away from the refined carbs such as pastries. Instead, stick to slow releasing carbs such as oats and fresh fruit.
